Mountain Heroes
Paintings for the homonym book by Andrea Carabelli, 2022. The book is a theatrical script that tells the stories of climbers of the 20th century, mostly European, whose enterprises and courage are still an example to everyone.
All the words are taken from the climbers’ journals and interviews or from articles written at the time by great Italian writer Dino Buzzati, and translated into dialogues for the acting on stage.
I made these images merging several different techniques, from paint to lights and translucid layers, to photography and digital elaboration. The results are high quality digital images meant for Fine Art prints.
My attempt in these works was not to describe the peaks, but to recreate the image that the climbers may have in their minds and in their spirits before the climbing, in which the mountain is seen as the object of desire: oftentimes they actually refer to it as a fascinating woman, as a betraying whore, or as a great mother…
